Most employees probably found themselves attending at least one party event in the last few weeks and of course, the big one is tonight. The phrase Hearables has been coined for smart wearable devices that are worn in the ear. In the last two years we have seen an explosion in devices that fit within this category. The truth is that hearing aids were the first hearables. This new wave of devices is more about lifestyle and activity than it is about hearing better.

The recent introduction of Google Glass, which uses bone conduction to transmit sound, has sparked new interest in bone conduction technology (sending sound to the inner ear by vibrating the bones of the skull).

I heard about the new closed caption glasses from Sony and decided to give them a spin at a local movie theater. I don’t have a hearing loss, but usually watch TV with the subtitles on so I’m used to captioning.

Both of these styles are wired receiver hearing aids, where the receiver is at the end of a wire and is placed in position in the ear. The question often asked is, aren’t they the same thing? The answer is yes and no.
